Launch of the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales, officially launched the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens project on 28 September 2010. Mayor Ken Halstead, Wingecarribee Shire Council and Pru Goward MP Member for Goulburn also participated on the day planting a tree each.

The community of the Southern Highlands were represented with each of the Garden Clubs in the Southern Highlands planting a tree to create the Foundation Avenue. Garden clubs involved in the day include the Highlands Garden Society Bowral Inc, Mittagong Garden Club Inc, Bowral Garden Club Inc, Moss Vale and District Garden Club, BundanoonGarden Club Inc, Robertson Garden Club Inc, Australian Plant Society Southern Highlands Group and the Australian Garden History Society Southern Highlands Branch.

Trees selected for the occasion included both exotic and native trees to reflect the four seasons of the Southern Highlands. A collection of six different crab apples, including Malus floribunda, Malus aldenhamensis, Malus lemoinei, Malus profusion and Malus spectabilis. The native trees were represented by a stand of Eucalyptus amplifolia which is endemic to the site and a member of the endangered ecological community Shale Woodland.
